Our Aspire candidate is truly a man of vision, who had dreams from a young age on how to impact his society and with diligence, make his own little difference count.
Godwin Benson an Akwa Ibom indigene born in Lagos on the 11th of July 1989, he grew up in a simple Christian family with parents that taught him to love God. The third and “avid reader” child of four children was often regarded as the “destructive” one as he’d disassemble almost everything in an attempt to understand how it worked.
Godwin obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Systems Engineering from the University of Lagos in 2012, and graduated with a First-Class Honours, Best Graduating Student in the engineering faculty and third best in the entire graduating set. He interned in Exxon Mobil as a support engineer, and being a Mathematics prodigy, he taught Further Math in Ibadan during his NYSC from 2013 to February 2014. Moving on from this, he got his first job as an Associate ICT Risk Advisory Consultant in Deloitte Nigeria in June 2014.
But while growing up he had always had the passion to help people succeed and liked the fact that he could do something and see how it impacted lives for good. Deep down, he was aware that God had sent him to accomplish an assignment on earth. So, while working in Deloitte he realised he needed to leave for him to accomplish his vision. Although he was castigated and mocked for leaving a juicy job, he had learnt early to trust God to take care of him, and thus Tuteria was born.
Tuteria is an online innovative tutoring solution that matches tutors and potential students, schedule lessons based on their personal preferences and needs thus opening tutoring to full time and part time tutors.
The idea was birthed in 2005 when Godwin was in high school, he taught two children Math as a private tutor near his home for about a month and didn’t get paid. He was hurt by this and so he wanted to prevent others from experiencing such. Down the line while researching out his business model, he discovered through surveys that people wanted to learn a lot of things but found it difficult to find those that could teach it and especially people close to them. The surveys also revealed that parents were potentially the early adopters for this type of service and most would pay for it based on recommendations. Before building Tuteria, he founded Transtudent World where he shared academic insights with thousands of students from more than 19 countries. With all this wealth of experience and data, and his savings he finally launched Tuteria on the 3rd of March 2014. Since its launch, it has registered over 7,500 vetted tutors across the platform offering academic, non-academic, and skill acquisition courses. It thus happens that one can now register to be tutored for certification exams like ICAN or learn to swim or may be bead making. Through the platform, the company is able to make money from every booking made by clients and is fast growing to reach many states in Nigeria.
Godwin was one of the top 30 finalists of the Aso Villa Demo Day event held in Abuja where he met with the Presidency, and with Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg who both applauded Tuteria’s contribution to education. He emerged winner of Facebook’s Internet.Org Africa Innovation Challenge in Education, as well as a recipient of the Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Award 2016. He was also a winner of the prestigious Innovation Prize for Africa, 2016 as one of the top 10 most innovative ideas in Africa by the Africa Innovation Foundation held in Botswana, as well as the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation 2016 by the Royal Academy, United Kingdom held in London. He is a very thorough person who demands high standards and excellence from others and especially from himself.
As a budding entrepreneur, he believes entrepreneurs should learn about everything relating to their business, and with the right team, success is just around the corner. As challenges come, learn from it fast, adapt and keep moving.
But the driving force behind the man Godwin Benson is the vision God planted in his heart and the reality that his life and work will inspire and create opportunities for millions to succeed.
We present to you our April Aspire Candidate, Godwin Benson.
